I'm a big fan of calzones - when they're done right - and thought I'd share a serendipitous find with y'all...
Viva Italian restaurant on Columbus has really, really good calzones! Fresh ingredients and not expensive, especially considering you're in the middle of tourist & Eurotrash hell (aka North Beach). Having been there before and liked it, I don't know why it took me this long to try their non-pasta dishes, but I'm glad I did.
Check it out!

Re: Calzone (& pretty f*cking good too!)
Thu, February 3, 2005 - 11:07 PMI used to work near Viva and it was our favourite lunch delivery place. The food is great there, and reasonable. Now that I work and live too far for their delivery I really miss the place. -

Fri, February 4, 2005 - 11:06 AMWhy anyone would eat at any of the various tourist traps around there, stinking or otherwise, beats the hell out of me.
My date & I got stuffed to the gills w/ a gigantic Mediterranean salad, fresh bread w/ olive oil & balsamic, the calzone, & drinks for $30.

Re: Calzone (& pretty f*cking good too!)
Tue, February 8, 2005 - 12:37 PMI'm glad you brought this up as there has been a calzone issue that's been eating at me for years.
I once worked in an Italian place (Dom's in Houston) where their calzones were deep fried like french fries. I recall, as a young man, very young, always getting oil splattered on my arm if I didn't place it in just right. That's how I thought they were made.
But in the years that have passed, I've never seen them made in this fashion. What gives? Did Dom invent that? is it a custom of a certain part of Italy? Have I just not stumbled into other places that fry their calzones? I'd love to have one again, since it's been some 23 years since the last one. (Dom has passed away and I don't know how to locate his brother who ran the place with him. Good people!) -

Re: Calzone (& pretty f*cking good too!)
Tue, February 8, 2005 - 12:46 PMI'm no expert in Italian cuisine, but I'd venture a guess that the deep-fried variant you mention is a Texas regionalism.
There are, however, pizza crusts at some places around the Bay Area that contain more oil and tend to turn crunchy & taste fried, if that's your thing. -

Re: Calzone (& pretty f*cking good too!)
Tue, February 8, 2005 - 12:56 PMCould be that Mr. Luigi adapted it for Texas, but I've not found it again since his, even all over Texas. All I see is baked. I guess what I'm saying is, if it's not already out there, I sure wish someone would try it and discover how fantastic it is so I can have some again. -

Re: Calzone (& pretty f*cking good too!)
Tue, February 8, 2005 - 1:16 PMYou won't regret it! I used to make ham and mushroom calzones for my meal. His dough was so good and the sauce was to die for. He also taught me how to throw pizzas. Good times. Good times. -

Re: Calzone (& pretty f*cking good too!)
Tue, February 8, 2005 - 4:02 PMA deep-fried calzone is a pizza puff. Lame, and of course, anything that is fried tastes damn good. -

Re: Calzone (& pretty f*cking good too!)
Tue, February 8, 2005 - 11:54 PMNope, sorry, it's not a pizza puff. It's a calzone. It's big, cheesy and dips in sauce but it's not baked. And also apparently, extinct. Not to put down pizza puffs, mind you.

Is rigatoni like angel hair?
What's the difference between Bruschetta and Salsa on Garlic toast?
Dude, I'm starving...

Re: Calzone (& pretty f*cking good too!)
Wed, February 9, 2005 - 11:53 AMSorry, I will disagree with that till the day I day. A pizza puff is a small complete pizza in a puff. A fried calzone is still a calzone, but the cooking method is different. Mine still has the (I forgot the name of that cheese) as well as a slice of mozz. and whatever toppings the client wanted. Then, it was dipped in sauce. That is not a puff. -
